Minoxidil for Beard Growth - Does It Work?

Minoxidil for Beard Growth - Does It Work?

Jacob Pursley

Short Answer

It can work great for some men, but it doesn't work for everyone. There are also some important considerations and side effects to take into account before trying it.

If you're here, you're probably wondering if Minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, actually works for beard growth.

The answer is a bit nuanced, but yes, it does work for some men. But it doesn't work for everyone. There are also some considerations to take into account before deciding to use it.

First off - it's worth mentioning that Minoxidil is only FDA-approved for scalp hair, not beard growth. The use of Minoxidil for beard growth is considered off-label. Maybe you care about that or maybe you don't, but it is at least worth mentioning.

Secondly - while it seems to be able to help stimulate existing or dormant hair follicles, it can't create new ones where they don't exist.

Third - it also takes months of consistent use to see results in most cases, and some guys experience side effects like dry skin, irritation, or even headaches. Many guys follow skin care routines while on it to help reduce symptoms such as dryness or irritation.

And here’s a big one - results aren’t always permanent, especially if the hairs haven’t fully matured yet. The vellus hairs (essentially peach fuzz) need to develop into terminal (mature) hairs before they have a chance of surviving on their own.

So while some guys are seeing results from it, it’s not a magic fix for all patchy beards.

If you’re considering it, make sure you do your research first - and, of course, it's always a good idea to check with a licensed dermatologist first.

While beard oil won't help with beard growth, it can help reduce dryness and irritation. If this is something you are interested in, check out our collection of beard oils here.
